Citizens triumph against Raigadh Maha-Mumbai SEZ

The Mukesh Ambani-led Raigadh Special Economic Zone project, touted as the
country's biggest SEZ has now been scrapped by the Maharashtra government.
Protesting farmers in the area will now get their land back.
Floated by Ambani in partnership with Anand Jain, the Raigadh Maha-Mumbai SEZ needed over 20,000 acres. But villagers who owned all this land put up massive resistance. And when the state conducted a one of its kind referendum in 2008, the majority voted against it. In the end the project acquired only 13 per cent of the land, which now has to be handed back. Activists call it a victory for the citizens' movements. Mukesh Ambani may have lost the bid to build a massive SEZ, but work on the Navi Mumbai SEZ close to Raigadh is on in full swing.
