Ranchi: One villager was killed when Maoists first attacked a police station and then blasted a house in Jharkhand's Latehar district, police said Thursday.

According to police, Maoist guerrillas first attacked Balumath police station, around 130 km from Ranchi. Police retaliated and the gunfight lasted almost an hour.

The rebels then blasted the home of Upendra Sahu near the police station. The Maoists first asked the occupants to vacate the house and blew it up with explosives, police said. They also fired indiscriminately at villagers killing one Ramu Sao.

Maoist guerrillas are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state.
